An Overview of the Big 5 Personality Test

The big 5 personality test was devised by various sets of researchers whop all started off by studying traits and analyzing various factors. During this research there were hundreds of traits that were measured and looked at in terms of peer ratings, self-reporting, questionnaire data and objective measures. All of these measures were looked at in order to understand the underlying factors, which makes up the personality. The model that was devised due to this research looked the relationship between academic behaviors and personality.

The initial model of the big 5 personality test was later enhanced by Raymond Christal and Ernest Tupes during 1961, however this failed to reach an academic audience until the 1980’s. In 1990 an advanced five factor model of this personality test was created by J.M Digman and this taken to the highest point by Lewis Goldberg. The big 5 personality test has been created based on the five main factors that make up a personality and incorporates all of the theory that is available within the sector of personality psychology.

As the name suggest this theory looks at the five main factors that are concerned with personality. The first factor is the openness to experience and this takes into account the appreciation for emotion, adventure, art, curiosity, unusual ideas and a variety of experience. The openness that someone has reflects the degree of curiosity intelligence that they have and the preference for novelty that someone has. People who are more open tend to be creative compared to people who are classed as having a closed personality. This factor is also the extent to which a person is independent or imaginative and the preference of someone to have a variety of activities or a set routine. There is some disagreement that remains with regards to how to interpret the openness of this factor and it is sometimes referred to as the intellect as opposed to the openness for experience.

Conscientiousness is another thing that is considered with this test and this looks at the tendency to be dependable and organized as well as the ability to show self-discipline. More conscientious people will prefer to have everything planned as opposed to just being spontaneous. Young people tend to be conscientious than older people. Extraversion is the energy, positive emotions, assertiveness and level of social skills. Extroverts tend to seek simulation and enjoy being in the company of others. Introverts tend to have a low level of social engagement and energy compared to extroverts. Introverts often appear to be low key and quiet deliberately and they are often less involved in the social world. The big 5 personality test will make it possible to find out what type of personality you actually have.

Agreeableness is the tendency to be cooperative and compassionate as opposed to being antagonizing and suspicious towards other people. The ability to be agreeable is also a good measure of how helpful and trusting somebody is and whether they are generally well tempered or not. Neuroticism is the tendency to easily experience emotions that are unpleasant such as anxiety, depression, vulnerability and anger. Neuroticism is also commonly referred to as the impulse or stability to control emotions and this is commonly referred to as emotional stability.
